Nelson and her sister Rodney were the only British battleships built between the wars, designed under the Washington Treaty limits. All nine of her 16-inch guns sat in three triple turrets forward of the bridge, giving her an unmistakable profile.

She served throughout the Second World War, covering the Malta convoys, the North African and Sicilian landings and the Normandy invasion. The Italian armistice was signed aboard her at Malta in 1943, and she was scrapped in 1949.
