Ise was commissioned in 1917 with twelve 14-inch guns and was modernized in the 1930s. After the loss of four carriers at Midway she was converted into a hybrid battleship-carrier, with her two aft turrets replaced by a hangar and flight deck.

She never flew aircraft in combat, but fought at Leyte Gulf in October 1944 as part of the decoy force. She was sunk by air attack at Kure in July 1945.
