Iowa was the lead ship of the last and fastest American battleship class, commissioned in 1943 with nine 16-inch guns and a design speed of 33 knots. She carried President Roosevelt across the Atlantic on the way to the Tehran Conference and fought in the Pacific with the fast carrier task forces.

She bombarded targets in Korea, was modernized with missiles in the 1980s, and was decommissioned in 1990. She is now a museum ship in Los Angeles.
