West Virginia was commissioned in 1923 with eight 16-inch guns. Sunk at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, she was raised and completely rebuilt, returning in 1944 with a new superstructure, torpedo bulges and modern anti-aircraft guns.
At the Battle of Surigao Strait in October 1944 she fired the opening salvos of the last battleship-versus-battleship action in history. She was in Tokyo Bay for the Japanese surrender.
