Akitsu Maru was a passenger-cargo liner taken over by the Imperial Japanese Army while still under construction and completed in 1942 as a landing craft carrier with a full-length flight deck, making her one of the first purpose-built amphibious assault ships.

She carried troops and landing craft across the Pacific and was later fitted to operate anti-submarine autogyros for convoy escort. She was torpedoed and sunk by the submarine USS Queenfish in November 1944.
