Béarn was laid down as a Normandie-class battleship and completed in 1927 as France's first aircraft carrier. Slow and soon outdated, she was used mainly as an aircraft transport by 1939.

She spent most of the Second World War immobilized at Martinique, then was refitted in the United States as an aircraft transport. She later served as a submarine tender and was scrapped in 1967.
