USS Cimarron (AO-22) was the lead ship of the Cimarron class, a group of fast fleet oilers built so the U.S. Navy's tankers could keep pace with its carriers and battleships. Commissioned on 20 March 1939, she was 553 feet long, made 18 knots on twin screws, and spent the whole of World War II fueling the fleet at sea across the Pacific.

She refueled the task force for the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in April 1942, sailed in support of the Battle of Midway that June, and went on to serve from Guadalcanal and the Gilberts through Truk, the Marianas, Iwo Jima and Okinawa, earning 10 battle stars. After the war she made four tours off Korea and served in the Vietnam War before being decommissioned in 1968.
