The nine Independence-class light carriers were Cleveland-class light cruiser hulls converted while under construction in 1942 and 1943, when the US Navy urgently needed more flight decks. They were fast enough to operate with the Essex-class fleet carriers and each carried around 30 aircraft.
USS Independence (CVL-22) was commissioned in January 1943 and fought across the Central Pacific and at Leyte Gulf. She survived both atomic bomb tests at Bikini in 1946 and was sunk as a target in 1951. This kit uses the same hull as the SJS Cleveland-class cruiser kit, with a carrier flight deck and island.
