Lusitania entered service with Cunard in 1907 as the largest ship in the world and won the Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossing that year. Her steam turbines and four screws set a new standard for express liners.

On 7 May 1915 she was torpedoed by the German submarine U-20 off the south coast of Ireland and sank in 18 minutes with the loss of 1,198 people, a turning point in American opinion of the war.
