Enterprise was commissioned in 1938 and became the most decorated American ship of the Second World War, with 20 battle stars. Her aircraft helped sink four Japanese carriers at Midway, and she fought in nearly every major carrier battle of the Pacific war.

Nicknamed the "Big E," she survived repeated damage, including a kamikaze hit in May 1945. Efforts to save her as a museum failed, and she was scrapped between 1958 and 1960.
