Belfast was commissioned in 1939 with twelve 6-inch guns. Two months into the war a German magnetic mine broke her back, and she spent more than two years under repair.

She helped sink Scharnhorst at the Battle of the North Cape in December 1943, bombarded the Normandy beaches on D-Day, and later served in the Korean War. She has been a museum ship on the Thames in London since 1971.
