Hawkins was the lead ship of a class of cruisers designed in the First World War to hunt commerce raiders, completed in 1919 with seven 7.5-inch guns. Her design set the 10,000-ton limit written into the Washington Treaty.

She served in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean in the Second World War and bombarded the Normandy beaches on D-Day. She was scrapped in 1947.
