Java was ordered before the First World War but not completed until 1925, armed with ten 15 cm guns to defend the Dutch East Indies. She served as a flagship in the Indies through the interwar years.

When Japan attacked in 1942 she joined the Allied ABDA striking force, and on 27 February 1942 she was torpedoed and sunk at the Battle of the Java Sea with heavy loss of life.
