Aoba was the lead ship of a class of two heavy cruisers commissioned in 1927, rearmed in the late 1930s with six 20 cm guns in three twin turrets.
She was badly damaged at the Battle of Cape Esperance in 1942 and survived several more hits, but was sunk at her moorings at Kure by U.S. carrier aircraft in July 1945.
