Kurama was laid down as an armored cruiser and completed in 1911 with four 12-inch and eight 8-inch guns, and was reclassified as a battlecruiser in 1912. She represented Japan at the 1911 Coronation Fleet Review for King George V.

During the First World War she searched the Pacific for the German East Asia Squadron. She was scrapped in 1923 under the Washington Naval Treaty.
