Takao was the lead ship of her class, commissioned in 1932 with ten 20 cm guns and a towering bridge structure. She fought in the Philippines and Dutch East Indies campaigns and at the Second Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in November 1942.
She was torpedoed by USS Darter at the start of the Battle of Leyte Gulf and limped to Singapore, where she stayed for the rest of the war. She was scuttled by the Royal Navy in 1946.
