Zara was the lead ship of Italy's most heavily armored class of heavy cruisers, commissioned in 1931 with eight 203 mm guns. She took part in the Battle of Calabria and other operations against the British Mediterranean Fleet.
On the night of 28 March 1941, during the Battle of Cape Matapan, she was caught at close range by British battleships and sunk along with her sister Fiume.
