New Orleans was the lead ship of a class of seven heavy cruisers commissioned in 1934 with nine 8-inch guns.
She was at Pearl Harbor during the attack and fought at Coral Sea, Midway and the Eastern Solomons. At Tassafaronga in November 1942 a torpedo blew off her bow; she was repaired and served to the end of the war.
