Akizuki was the lead ship of a class of large Japanese destroyers commissioned in 1942, built to escort carriers with eight 10 cm high-angle guns.
She fought in the Guadalcanal campaign and was sunk at the Battle off Cape Engaño, part of Leyte Gulf, in October 1944.
